Cafe Zeb is located on UC Berkeley’s campus in the Law School’s Boalt Hall. Like its nearby relatives – Free Speech Movement Cafe and Cafe Strada (the three cafes share the same owner and managers) – Cafe Zeb sources its fresh produce, coffee and other goodies from local and sustainable sources as much as possible. A neighborhood gem for over two years, Catahoula is a local’s coffee paradise, with coffee freshly roasted onsite by the café’s owner, Tim. Catahoula’s claim to fame is not only the freshly roasted beans – it has also fostered sense of community and camaraderie that keeps customers coming back and spreading the word. Free Speech Movement Café – Berkeley, CA (UC Campus)

The Free Speech Movement (FSM) Café is centrally located at the entrance to UC Berkeley’s Moffitt Library and offers indoor and terrace seating. The menu is a manifestation of the ideals inherent in the Free Speech Movement and its soups, salads and sandwiches are made with local, sustainable or organic ingredients whenever available. All coffee is Fair Trade and organic and all foods are house-made including organic breads and a great selection of pastries made with organic flour. The cafe is a great place to gather with friends or study and is also a venue for periodic educational events such as forums, panels, exhibits and other events aimed at generating critical discussion about contemporary social and political issues.

Caffe Strada – Berkeley, CA

Caffé Strada has been a staple of the UC Berkeley campus for many years. Filled students studying, faculty members chatting or locals meeting up with friends, many customers enjoy their coffee and goodies under the gazebo or in the shaded patio. Caffé Strada is known for its “Strada Bianca” (which chocolate mocha) as well as delicious pastries that patrons enjoy in the comfortable atmosphere that allows you to watch people walk by as you drink coffee. On Sundays they have live classical/jazz type music that undoubtedly keeps Strada’s loyal following and visitors from the adjacent Bancroft Hotel (also a green business) happy every day!

Remedy Coffee – Oakland, CA

Opened in 2010, Remedy Coffee has quickly become a neighborhood favorite in Oakland’s Temescal area. Not only does Remedy serve delicious coffee from Ritual Roasters, but the café features home-baked goodies and locally sourced ingredients and foods. The café’s space is very welcoming, well lit and offers a variety of seating options, free Wi-Fi, a great music selection, and local art on the wall. You also can’t miss the Pacific Bell phone booth right when you walk in the main door. There’s a back patio coming soon, which will just add to the many popular features of Remedy and delight its loyal clientele.

Cafe Gabriela recently opened in downtown Oakland and is quickly gaining a fan base. The cafe’s owners are very committed to supporting local suppliers and they serve up yummy Blue Bottle coffee and pastries and vegan treats from different local bakeries. Cafe Gabriela is quickly becoming renowned for their authentic pulled port adobo sandwich, and their other sandwiches are a bit hit as well. The cafe’s light airy atmosphere and friendly staff make this a welcome oasis in the hustle and bustle of downtown. It’s right next to the 12the St. BART stop – so make sure to stop by when you’re in the area!

Actual Cafe is a new addition to Oakland, located at the corner of Alcatraz and San Pablo. One step inside this cafe and you get the feeling that you are welcome – whether you entered on two feet, two wheels or one wheel. The bike-friendly nature of Actual is impressive – with an awesome back wall dedicated to hanging bike storage, and a tire pump near by. First and foremost, Actual Cafe is dedicated to Oakland’s local community, and works hard to support it from the food and coffee it carries to the art and events is supports. Awaken Cafe is in downtown Oakland at 414 14th Street (between Broadway & Franklin) next to the 12th Street BART stop.
