A neighborhood gem for over two years, Catahoula is a local’s coffee paradise, with coffee freshly roasted onsite by the café’s owner, Tim. Catahoula’s claim to fame is not only the freshly roasted beans – it has also fostered sense of community and camaraderie that keeps customers coming back and spreading the word. The café is committed to sustainability and supporting other local businesses and offers yummy vegan options – even a vegan whoopee pie! The unique value of this café is summed up well by Tim’s statement : “I’m just a simple man who fell in love with coffee and the roasting process. My goal is to deliver quality coffee that supports the farmers, and sustains the environment, and to educate the coffee drinking community as to what good coffee really is.”

Caffé Strada has been a staple of the UC Berkeley campus for many years. Filled students studying, faculty members chatting or locals meeting up with friends, many customers enjoy their coffee and goodies under the gazebo or in the shaded patio. Caffé Strada is known for its “Strada Bianca” (which chocolate mocha) as well as delicious pastries that patrons enjoy in the comfortable atmosphere that allows you to watch people walk by as you drink coffee. On Sundays they have live classical/jazz type music that undoubtedly keeps Strada’s loyal following and visitors from the adjacent Bancroft Hotel (also a green business) happy every day!

Not only a bakery, the locally owned Bread Workshop café offers coffee and a selection of fresh-baked pastries and breads, as well as healthy, sustainable foods for dine-in or take-away. Known as an advocate for sustainable foods and practices, the Bread Workshop considers many aspects of sustainability when choosing their products, from product purity and production integrity to local sourcing and packaging. As part of these efforts, the Bread Workshop offers seasonal, local and organic foods at reasonable prices and they offer a sustainable foods information centre in the café to help educate and promote this. Besides this café’s commitment to green business practices, what it is known for is the BREAD! – and the Bread Workshop delivers daily to many restaurants and retail outlets around the Bay Area.
