Cafe Gabriela recently opened in downtown Oakland and is quickly gaining a fan base. The cafe’s owners are very committed to supporting local suppliers and they serve up yummy Blue Bottle coffee and pastries and vegan treats from different local bakeries. Cafe Gabriela is quickly becoming renowned for their authentic pulled port adobo sandwich, and their other sandwiches are a bit hit as well. The cafe’s light airy atmosphere and friendly staff make this a welcome oasis in the hustle and bustle of downtown. It’s right next to the 12the St. BART stop – so make sure to stop by when you’re in the area!

Elijah Bleu’s Cafe

If you are anywhere in the Lake Tahoe area, stopping by Elijah Bleu’s cafe in downtown Truckee, CA is well worth it. Recently opened in November, 2009, Elijah Bleu’s has a welcoming atmosphere with a taste of southern charm. They serve Blue Bottle coffee from SF, and have a tasty menu featuring organic ingredients and local products. In their words, “From fresh-baked biscuits and grits to black-eyed peas and sweet tea, our classic southern flavors bring a touch of voodoo to our menu.” Elijah Bleu’s is a place you can hang out for awhile, and enjoy the mountain atmosphere while supporting a great green local business.

Actual Cafe is a new addition to Oakland, located at the corner of Alcatraz and San Pablo. One step inside this cafe and you get the feeling that you are welcome – whether you entered on two feet, two wheels or one wheel. The bike-friendly nature of Actual is impressive – with an awesome back wall dedicated to hanging bike storage, and a tire pump near by. First and foremost, Actual Cafe is dedicated to Oakland’s local community, and works hard to support it from the food and coffee it carries to the art and events is supports. Their website explains their commitment to community, and how “interactions” are at the heart of building it. “Actual Cafe is, first and foremost, a place where these interactions can happen. A comfortable place. A place to meet old friends and new. To talk to neighbors. Wicked Grounds Cafe

Wicked Grounds is San Francisco’s first and only kink cafe and boutique. They show that kink, great coffee and green business practices can and should intersect naturally! As WG’s website says, this cafe is “open to EVERYONE who is open minded enough not to be offended by the erotic and kink nature of our business. We welcome anyone and everyone, as long as they are 18+.” Wicked Grounds serves excellent coffee from Ritual Roasters, as well as locally sourced food and treats. Borderlands Cafe

Borderlands Cafe recently opened it’s doors and is adjacent to and shares owners with the popular Borderlands Books. The new cafe is a bright addition to the neighborhood, with big windows, beautiful wooden floors and comfortable seating. The cafe boasts yummy simple foods, great coffee and no wi-fi, which creates a congenial atmosphere. Considering their love of the written word, they aptly display dozens of different magazines which are for sale as well. This is a cafe to take a friend to, where you can share conversation, play a board game or browse through a magazine and stay awhile.
