Duboce Park Cafe – San Francisco

Duboce Park Cafe has been on a roll lately and is improving their green business practices left and right.  Thanks to their recent Carrotmob event on April 25th, in three hours Duboce Park cafe tripled its afternoon sales and served 3 times as many people than they normally do in a full day.  The cafe dedicated 50% of sales from that event toward greening actions, such as:

- Creating a new 10% price discount for people who bring their own mugs
- Pursuing green business certification through the city of San Francisco’s Green Business Program
- Putting in a dirty / clean spoon system to replace the wooden stir sticks
- Exploring biodegradable plastics
- Researching options for using more post-consumer paper
- Putting in new customer-facing 3-color trash cans
- The cafe pursued an energy audit with SF Energy Watch, resulting in replacment of 23 flood lights with lower wattage lamps (going from 50w to 37w); replacing 7 exterior halogen lights and 3 incandescent lamps with photo sensors with 10 compact flourescent lamps (going from 65w to 23w) and also changing ballasts and lamps in three 40w T-12 lamps, replacing them with 32W T-8 lamps
- Just the lighting changes alone will result in the reduction of 4,022 lb. or 2.0 Tons of CO2 annually!

More details of the event and other actions Duboce Park Cafe is pursuing can be read on Carrotmob San Francisco’s blog.  Needless to say, we are thrilled that Duboce Park cafe joined GCN and we hope you’ll go visit them and keep the momentum going.  And don’t forget to bring your own mug!
